4TH GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING AND CPD SEMINAR

Last November 4, 2019, the United Architects of the Philippines Marikina Valley Chapter held its 4th General Membership Meeting and Marvalley GMM Lecture Series: Strengthening the Architecture Profession and Architect’s Link to Other Fields and Allied Professions, Thematic Module 03: Heritage as a Pillar of Sustainable Development at CVJ CLUBHOUSE (CVJ Food Catering), Marikina City, 1800 Metro Manila.

The program started with the invocation led by Ar. Manifelmo C. Dacanay, followed by the National Anthem, UAP March and UAP Credo, and the meeting was formally called to order. A sponsor (Timberpro Inc.) have presented their quality products over dinner.

The opening remarks and the introduction to the guest speaker were led by Ar. Jasmin Grace Lee. This thematic lecture in heritage conservation introduced participants to understand the relationship between cultural heritage and sustainable development. Guest Speakers Ar. Mary Rajelyn Javier-Busmente, uap (Basics in Architectural Conservation) and Ar. Jayson B. Portem, uap (Architect's Role in the Protection of the Nations' Built Heritage) discussed how heritage conservation can shape society and how it can be the most sustainable method in creating a harmonious built environment.

The lecture introduced the concept of heritage and its vital role in human and societal development and establishes the role of architects in this specialized field of profession. The participants were noticed to be very attentive during the entire seminar proper as the speakers Ar. Busmente and Ar. Portem did an interesting presentation. After their talk several participants actively asked questions regarding the topic. The questions raised were about the challenges in the practice of conservation (responses from the speakers were priests and politicians, funding, and technical know-how) and the implication of community acceptance to the conservation process. An interesting question raised by the speakers to the participants on whether it is acceptable or not to move a heritage structure from its original environment, to which the participants gave their insight. The response of the speakers to their question was “if it was the last option”.

Marvalley GMM Lecture Series: Strengthening the Architecture Profession and Architect’s Link to Other Fields and Allied Professions, Thematic Module 03: Heritage as a Pillar of Sustainable Development is a PRC pre-accredited program for architects with approved 2.0 CPD Units provided by the United Architects of the Philippines applied by UAP Marikina Valley Chapter.

Business Proper for Marvalley Architects immediately followed the lecture. The President’s Report covered different chapter activities, upcoming projects, Joint Area Assembly, UAP National notes and updates, and events to be held within the succeeding months. The meeting was adjourned after the recognition of birthday celebrators and the group photo. Ar. Merrijill Medenilla and Ar. Grace Ronquillo are the master of ceremonies.
