UAP MARIKINA VALLEY CHAPTER AT THE 2016 JOINT AREA ASSEMBLY - X-STREAM: ARCHITECTS IN ACTION

2016-10-14 14
This year the UAP Marikina Valley was represented by fourteen members composed of some officers, board members, and Conex 2017 organizing committee members. We all decided to go a day ahead of the scheduled conference so that we could tour the city and rest before the October 14-15 meeting.

2016-10-14 14We arrived 15 minutes earlier from our estimated time of arrival. I was surprised to see a very progressive and clean city. On our first night we stayed at the Riverside Inn which was reserved for us by the Boysen Visayas – Mindanao group. As soon as we dropped our luggage at the Inn, we went out to explore the town by going to certain famous landmarks like the Molo church, the Jaro Cathedral and the Camiña Balai na Bato. This last site that we went to is an Ancestral home which was turned into a restaurant and at the same time, a museum of furniture and artifacts of the Hispanic era.

As part of our tour, we were served chocolate ‘Tablea’ drink and biscocho bread.  In the evening, we were treated by the Boysen group to a sumptuous dinner of seafoods like ‘talaba’, squid and other fish food delicacies at a sensible restaurant.

STRUCTURAL RETROFITTING

Earthquakes do not kill but its effects to the buildings and surroundings which kill. Nearly 5,000 earthquakes occur every year, about 1,000 are felt. Minor earthquakes occur nearly constantly around the world in places like California and Alaska in the United States, as well as in Mexico, Guatemala, Chile, Peru, Indonesia, Iran, China, Pakistan, Portugal, Turkey, New Zealand, Greece, Italy, India and Japan, but earthquakes can occur almost anywhere. The energy released on earth’s surface only by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami was estimated at 26 megatons of TNT (Trinitrotoluene). This energy is equivalent to over 1500 times that of the Hiroshima atomic bomb, but less than that of Tsar Bomba, the largest nuclear weapon ever detonated.

INTRODUCTION

Earthquake creates great devastation in terms of life, money, and failures of structures. We know that earthquake is an important field of study for a long time. Seismic or Structural Retrofitting is a collection of mitigation technique for    Earthquake Engineering. It is utmost importance are for historic monuments, areas prone to severe earthquake and tall or expensive structures. The performance objectives when conducting structural retrofitting are public safety, structure survivability, and structure functionality.

FILIPINO ARCHITECTS IN THE 70's

Image result for LEANDRO LOCSINLeandro Locsin
Leandro Locsin (1928-1994) was in some ways a quintessential Renaissance man. A brilliant architect, interior designer, artist and classically trained pianist, Locsin was also a keen art collector, amassing a sizable collection of fine Chinese art and ceramics during his lifetime. It is for his buildings, however, that he is remembered. From airport terminals to memorial chapels, arts centers to stock exchange structures, Locsin left his mark on the urban landscape of the Philippines.

Tanghalang Maria Makiling | © Julia Sumangil/WikiCommonsLocsin was determined to reconfigure western architectural mores for a Filipino audience. His most substantial contribution to Filipino architecture is the Cultural Center of the Philippines, a collection of five buildings that demonstrate the architect’s drive to find a vernacular form of modernist architecture. The National Theatre building within the complex is a good example of Locsin’s trademark style. Known as ‘floating volume’. It consists of a two-floor-high block of travertine marble cantilevered 12 feet into the air. The theatre harks back to traditional Filipino dwelling huts, but on a monumentally modern scale.
Despite the wide range of buildings Locsin created, all of them have one thing in common: concrete. His ability to make this most monolithic of materials appear weightless, and to elegantly combine Western brutalism with vernacular elements, led Locsin’s peers to dub him the ‘poet of space.

Paco Park | © Ramon F Velasquez/WikiCommons

Image result for ILDEFONSO SANTOSThe father of Philippine landscape architecture, Ildefonso Paez Santos, or IP Santos as he was known, created some of the best-loved urban spaces in the Philippines. Landscape architecture, which deals with parks, plazas and green spaces, was a little-considered element of urban planning in the first half of the 20th century. However, Santos changed that, carrying out pioneering work that, after four decades in the profession, led him to become National Artist for Architecture in 2006.

One of his earliest successful projects was the Makati Commercial Center, an outdoor shopping mall in which the shop fronts and walkways were interspersed with garden trails, fountains and public artworks. This led him to be commissioned to revitalize Manila’s Paco Park, the work for which he is perhaps best remembered. A former Spanish cemetery and Japanese ammunitions store, the park was transformed into a national park in 1966. Between 1967-1969, Santos revived the park’s grounds, incorporating the original park structures, including memorial sites and fortification walls, into a space for urban recreation.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE MARVALLEY CHAPTER 31ST ANIVERSARY

Welcome to UAP Marikina Valley Chapter’s 31st Anniversary celebration.

It has been thirty one years and Marikina Valley Chapter is again celebrating its anniversary.  So many things have transpired along our chapter’s proud history that our anniversary tends to be both a celebration and RETROspect.   Celebration, as we have achieved a tremendous amount of success over the past years as a result of its amazing and dedicated leaders and members.  Let us pay tribute to our past presidents who paved the way for us to become one of the most accomplished chapters of the UAP.  RETROspect, as we contemplate of our accomplishments and failure so as we can decide what happened in the past and learn from it as guide us to our future endeavors for a more better and stronger Marvalley.  As Richard Carlson said, "Reflection is one of the most underused yet powerful tools for success.”

So as Marikina Valley was built on a strong foundation, let us continue and commit to strive to the betterment of the chapter and continue the significant achievements that every member of this organization should be proud of, we want you to be part of it.. every step of it.

Lastly, in behalf of the FY2016-2017 Marikina Valley Board of Officers and all the members, I would like to thank our friends in the industry and partner organizations who helped us and contributed to our success in bringing social civic projects and public service through the years.

DESIGN IDEAS ; SPA-INSPIRED BATHROOMS

Inspirations are always the driving force to any great design. It springs life to any space. It gives someone an idea and inspires them to create. It provides a personality that users of that space acclimate and live into.

Spas transport you to another environment without having to go very far. A relaxing space away from the hassle and bustle of life, where you can tune out and have a few minutes or hours of peace. But what if you could have that kind of space in your own home? With a few key design elements, you can transform your bathroom into your very own relaxing spa. Here are the inspirations:

  1. Remove The Clutter
Have you ever seen a messy spa? There’s a reason why you find them so relaxing: the lack of clutter does wonders to your brain which facilitates peace of mind. Remove the clutter from your bathroom and create an environment that looks and feels clean.

F:\bathroom-shelf-display-ideas-bathroom-cabinet-shelf-ideas-bathroom-picture-bathroom-shelf-ideas-floating-shelves-ideas.jpg

  1. Add Personality
Echo the design of your favorite spas by using color in an interesting way. Choose earth colored tones to create a more relaxing and calming effect and are a lot easier to maintain than sterile, white tiles. Take a cue from the ocean and use sandy tones paired with aqua hues. Or take in the simple Zen lines and create interesting forms that renew the senses.

F:\pangkor-laut-resort-7-1140x660.jpg

  1. Quality Over Quantity
Invest in a good quality towels, bathmats and robes. It’ll make a difference right after you step out the shower and into a nice, fluffy towel.

  1. Small Upgrades
There is no need to change the entire of your bathroom. Instead, invest in a few small upgrades:  a better showerhead, ambient lighting, and a nicer, larger mirror.

  1. Sensuous Details
Consider having scented candles, a bouquet of flowers, wooden stands or containers, and some lotions and perfumes. It’s the little things that makes the difference and can make the space more inviting.

  1. Remove Labels
A bunch of half-empty shampoo and body wash bottles just adds to the visual clutter. Replace them with uniform containers, they fit well to space organizers and nicer to look at.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE 1ST GMM 2016

Welcome to another year for MARVALLEY.  It has been five years since I joined this prestigious chapter, and working with the chapter has opened my eyes to a whole new dimension as it showed me how Marvalley CARES for the community it serves.  How its members act as ONE that always BUILDS a reputable image for the architectural profession.  How it WORKS and CONSTRUCTS bridges that unite all affiliated fields to complete great tasks.  The qualities that made the chapter EVOLVE as one of the leading professional organization under the United Architects of the Philippines.

It is no secret that everything around us changes rapidly, especially the immensely challenging world of Architecture. And our organization needs to rise to these challenges to sustain and enhance our commitment and contributions to the growth of our profession, both locally and internationally.  We can only do this if we work as a TEAM.  As the famous philosopher Vince Lombradi once said: “The achievements of an organization are the combined efforts of each individual.”  Thus, this year, we will go under the banner GO TEAM Marvalley:  Globally Oriented and Technically Equipped Architects for the new Millennium.

Right now, I am honored and pleased to assume the duties and responsibilities of the 27th President of Marikina Valley Chapter, a chapter with multiple awards and a Hall of Famer under the UAP. I’m looking forward to all the opportunities and challenges that come with being the Chapter President. I believe with the help of the general membership, the past presidents, our new Board of Officers, and the untiring support of our sponsors and partners in the industry, we are bound to accomplish great tasks.  As the old adage goes, “if you want to go fast, go alone. But if you want to go farther, go together.”
Cheers and best of luck to us all.  Together let us GO TEAM MARVALLEY.

Ar. Philip John Padilla
Marikina Valley Chapter President FY 2016-2017
