STRUCTURAL RETROFITTING
Earthquakes do not kill but its effects to the buildings and surroundings which kill. Nearly 5,000 earthquakes occur every year, about 1,000 are felt. Minor earthquakes occur nearly constantly around the world in places like California and Alaska in the United States, as well as in Mexico, Guatemala, Chile, Peru, Indonesia, Iran, China, Pakistan, Portugal, Turkey, New Zealand, Greece, Italy, India and Japan, but earthquakes can occur almost anywhere. The energy released on earth’s surface only by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami was estimated at 26 megatons of TNT (Trinitrotoluene). This energy is equivalent to over 1500 times that of the Hiroshima atomic bomb, but less than that of Tsar Bomba, the largest nuclear weapon ever detonated.
INTRODUCTION
Earthquake creates great devastation in terms of life, money, and failures of structures. We know that earthquake is an important field of study for a long time. Seismic or Structural Retrofitting is a collection of mitigation technique for Earthquake Engineering. It is utmost importance are for historic monuments, areas prone to severe earthquake and tall or expensive structures. The performance objectives when conducting structural retrofitting are public safety, structure survivability, and structure functionality.

FILIPINO ARCHITECTS IN THE 70's
Leandro Locsin
Ildefonso P. Santos
Leandro
Locsin (1928-1994) was in some ways a quintessential Renaissance man. A
brilliant architect, interior designer,
artist and classically trained pianist, Locsin was also a keen art collector,
amassing a sizable collection of fine Chinese art and ceramics during his
lifetime. It is for his buildings, however, that he is remembered. From airport
terminals to memorial chapels, arts centers to stock exchange structures,
Locsin left his mark on the urban landscape of the Philippines.
Locsin
was determined to reconfigure western architectural mores for a Filipino
audience. His most substantial contribution to Filipino architecture is
the Cultural Center of the
Philippines, a collection of five buildings
that demonstrate the architect’s drive to find a vernacular form of modernist
architecture. The National Theatre building within the complex is a good
example of Locsin’s trademark style. Known as ‘floating volume’. It consists of
a two-floor-high block of travertine marble cantilevered 12 feet into the air.
The theatre harks back to traditional Filipino dwelling huts, but on a
monumentally modern scale.
Despite the wide range of buildings Locsin created, all of them have one
thing in common: concrete. His ability to make this most monolithic of
materials appear weightless, and to elegantly combine Western brutalism with
vernacular elements, led Locsin’s peers to dub him the ‘poet of space.Ildefonso P. Santos
The father of Philippine landscape architecture, Ildefonso Paez Santos, or IP Santos as he was known, created some of the best-loved urban spaces in the Philippines. Landscape architecture, which deals with parks, plazas and green spaces, was a little-considered element of urban planning in the first half of the 20th century. However, Santos changed that, carrying out pioneering work that, after four decades in the profession, led him to become National Artist for Architecture in 2006.
One of his earliest successful projects was the Makati Commercial Center, an outdoor shopping mall in which the shop fronts and walkways were interspersed with garden trails, fountains and public artworks. This led him to be commissioned to revitalize Manila’s Paco Park, the work for which he is perhaps best remembered. A former Spanish cemetery and Japanese ammunitions store, the park was transformed into a national park in 1966. Between 1967-1969, Santos revived the park’s grounds, incorporating the original park structures, including memorial sites and fortification walls, into a space for urban recreation.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE MARVALLEY CHAPTER 31ST ANIVERSARY
Welcome to UAP Marikina Valley Chapter’s 31st Anniversary celebration.
It has been thirty one years and Marikina Valley Chapter is again celebrating its anniversary. So many things have transpired along our chapter’s proud history that our anniversary tends to be both a celebration and RETROspect. Celebration, as we have achieved a tremendous amount of success over the past years as a result of its amazing and dedicated leaders and members. Let us pay tribute to our past presidents who paved the way for us to become one of the most accomplished chapters of the UAP. RETROspect, as we contemplate of our accomplishments and failure so as we can decide what happened in the past and learn from it as guide us to our future endeavors for a more better and stronger Marvalley. As Richard Carlson said, "Reflection is one of the most underused yet powerful tools for success.”
So as Marikina Valley was built on a strong foundation, let us continue and commit to strive to the betterment of the chapter and continue the significant achievements that every member of this organization should be proud of, we want you to be part of it.. every step of it.

Architecture plays an important role in society. People feel happy, they feel at home, they feel a sense of purpose and accomplishment and at ease with the environment because there is architecture involved. Truly it is a powerful expression of how society sees itself and how it views the environment.
